Help us build more equitable pathways into the workplace

Wavemakers is growing our Board of Directors. We are looking for thoughtful, collaborative leaders who believe that where someone lives, who they know, or the barriers they have faced should not determine whether they can build a meaningful career and experience a true sense of belonging at work.

This is an important moment for our organization. As we implement our three-to-five-year strategic plan and work toward Imagine Canada accreditation, our new Board members will help strengthen our governance, support our long-term financial resilience, and guide the next stage of our impact.

Open Board Positions

We are currently recruiting for the following positions:

  • Board Chair
    An inclusive facilitator, active listener, and strategic thinker who can provide leadership to the Board, foster a collaborative governance culture, and build a strong, supportive relationship with our Executive Director.

  • Treasurer
    A leader with accounting or financial management experience, such as a CPA, FCPA, or equivalent experience, who can provide financial oversight, guide annual budget reviews, and help strengthen and diversify our funding model.
    Our operational finances are supported by our Operations Director, a fractional CFO, and external accounting, bookkeeping, and audit professionals. This is a strategic oversight role; the Treasurer will not be expected to manage day-to-day bookkeeping.

  • Directors with Governance or Legal Expertise
    Leaders with experience in non-profit governance, legal or regulatory frameworks, board policies, or compliance who can help strengthen our governance practices and support our progress toward recognized national standards.

Who We Hope to Hear From

Professional skills are valuable, but they are only part of what makes someone an effective Board member.

We are looking for people who ask thoughtful questions, listen closely, consider different perspectives, and know how to challenge ideas constructively. Above all, we are looking for people who share our values and feel genuinely connected to our mission.

We also believe lived experience is expertise. Formal credentials and traditional corporate backgrounds are not the only paths to leadership. Community involvement, grassroots advocacy, and the perspectives gained from navigating structural barriers can all contribute to stronger governance and better decisions.

We actively encourage expressions of interest from people whose voices have historically been underrepresented in governance and leadership, including Indigenous Peoples, Black and racialized individuals, people living with visible or invisible disabilities, members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities, and others who have experienced barriers to employment or belonging.

Board Commitment

  • Approximately five to six hours per quarter

  • Four virtual Board meetings each year, typically lasting 90 to 120 minutes

  • Preparation and occasional asynchronous work between meetings

  • Light mentorship or advisory support based on your experience and interests

  • Participation from anywhere in Canada

  • A standard three-year term

Board positions are voluntary and uncompensated.

We recognize that personal and professional circumstances can change. We aim to foster a Board culture where members can communicate openly and where changing circumstances are approached with flexibility and understanding.

Wavemakers is a national non-profit creating more accessible and inclusive pathways between post-secondary education and the workplace.

Through the immersive Wavemakers Virtual Campus, post-secondary students from across Canada gain practical experience, collaborate with peers, learn from industry mentors, and build skills and professional connections.

Our virtual model helps remove geographic barriers and creates opportunities for students from different backgrounds, communities, and fields of study to learn and work together.
